Do you have any siblings? I have only one sister and growing up we were not close. Our fights used to be cray, so much so that our punishment was to sit outside of the house (out in the porch, killing mosquitoes with hopes that we would reconcile). Our relationship perhaps took off as sisters only towards adulthood and when we both started living away from Sri Lanka. Now I do look at my sister as a friend and is one of my favourite people on earth, despite being related 😄 . . . Since our relationship made amends over ten years ago, I have happily taken over the role as big sister (at most times) and Instagram-photographer because that’s something I genuinely enjoy doing. I love being overwhelmed with responsibility so much so to the extent that I like to drop all of it one random day and dash to the mountains or a 10-day meditation retreat. Should we have had another sibling, the dynamics would be different but thank our lucky stars that we don’t! 👭
For those who know me, you know how protective I am of my closest family and friends. I am fiercely maternal about these people because well, I don’t have too many of them really and it’s really important for me to keep them close, alive and safe from the evils of the world. I also want to do everything in my capacity to make their lives easier because that’s my way of ‘loving’ someone (love and I have a very complicated relationship and that’s a story for another day). This also means that I don’t talk about them as much or post pictures of them. Yes, I do use their lives as reference points in conversation (we have great stories to tell!) but that’s only in passing or only with the stories and anecdotes I’m comfortable throwing around. . . . This was taken during a little ‘adventure’ trip we took about two years ago to Polonnaruwa and then (to my dismay) a spontaneous detour to Anuradhapura. It was oodles of fun and we managed to take some pretty great pictures too.
How many us slow down? It’s the end of the year and while we sit back to reflect on things we have achieved, not achieved, wins, losses and lists that are similar in nature, how many of us actually take time to slow down and well in this case, enjoy the bubbles? . . . I don’t disagree, time does cost most people money and there aren’t many (daylight) hours left in the day to get the most done (also not to forget as women that we find it more difficult to do things in the night). But looking at everything that’s very “in” right now, be it self-care or self-love, they all come down to taking care of oneself, slowing down, breathing in all the smog and even having a nap. There isn’t always a need to go on a vacation or indulge in something that would cost two salaries. What’s perhaps most important is putting your brain at ease, be it by listening to a meditation app, taking a yoga class, putting your phone away or even doing a slow-mo twirl amidst a bubble blower at Universal Studios. . . . PS - Thanks to @lifeandstylewithn for being a real trooper and agreeing to do these ridiculous things for me.
Oh hi there! Happy December! 💃🏼 . . . This is a tad awkward for me because I don’t really ever post pictures of my face over here, but here I am! Yes, that’s me. The first was in December 2014 taken from a digital camera (remember those?) at Dubai Mall I think, when I went to Dubai to surprise @lifeandstylewithn for her birthday - November 2015 on an iPhone 5s on my first ‘solo’ vacation in Hikkaduwa, the foot is my Mother’s who decided to stay with me for the first of two nights I was planning to stay alone haha 😂 - and the third, just yesterday after my glorious hair ‘transformation’ (which my sister generously sponsored) and the picture was taken on portray mode on an iPhone 11 Pro Max! And yes, before you ask, I did take these very three pictures because I thought I looked great, because for me, Instagram is all about that curated lifestyle (also, great cameras go along way). If you really want to know how I am or who I am, I think some of my tweets or those unanswered WhatsApp messages/calls I haven’t returned/people I haven’t met in ages might give you a better picture. . . . At the end of last year, I did a #bestoftwelve where I tried to recall twelve of my best memories that happened during the year. This year however, has been all over the place to be honest. There have been high-highs and low-lows and honestly I don’t even know what to make of it. In light of this year of learning, I am ’trying’ to do a few days of posting for the next few days throughout the month of December. I’m not putting anything solid out there, because honestly I also don’t want to be too accountable (for an Instagram post, lol). See you (hopefully) tomorrow! 🙌🏼
If you’ve been to Kathmandu, you know how crowded, lively and noisy this place can be. While the country does not suffer from the colonial hangover we do, the remnants of hippy colonisation stands to date. But somewhere in this small valley sits Hanuman Dhokar Durbar Square, a complex of Hindu and Buddhist temples and shrines. . . I took this picture while I was in Nepal for work with my good friend, mentor, fabulous photographer and favourite Indian, @shaibaba who was shopping for prayer flags, the same kind you see around this structure. He was looking for some for his house and he told me that day that they flags were hung outside and were used to carry prayers and mantras through the wind.
Until recently, taking pictures of religious establishments was something I avoided - the previous image from 2011 was a picture-worthy mosque and known for its architecture, I think #hypocrite until recently. In my mind, a place of religious worship was private and you shouldn’t mess with its sanctity. But then everyone was doing it and I just followed 🐑 - sorry if you were looking for a more interesting story there lol.
